Woodbridge Road Academy Newsletter – February 26

Although January can be a bit of a dull month for some, we have had a busy half term as usual.

Pupils have been to visit Suffolk New College, been horse riding and visited Duxford War Museum to name but a few things. Today Year 11 made the food for our social breakfast and everyone joined in. It’s always a popular event.

 

Star Learners

Pupils have been working hard to get Star Learner slips to go towards their overall total, and we have asked our Pupil Council to recommend what they think is a suitable prize. We will keep you updated!

Usborne Sponsored “Ready, Steady, Read”

Thank you to everyone who took part in our sponsored read.

It was lovely to see the pupils taking part in school as well as at home. The final total has been confirmed at £532, which is a fantastic amount! The money will be put towards more books for the library. Thank you and well done to everyone.

Forest School

Forest school continues to be successful. Pupils have been preparing the flowerbeds for planting, we have purchased a large variety of seeds so it will be interesting to see what actually grows.

They also took part in the RSPB Big Birdwatch (insert photo 20.01.26 Birdwatch) and enjoyed seeing what birds were around school.

We have also had a visit from a tractor, Willow and Rowan classes got to sit in the tractor and learnt about what sort of food is harvested using a tractor.

 

Construction Careers Talks

We were lucky enough to have a visit from Joanna from the construction group Balfour Beatty. She worked with all the classes in school and talked to them about careers in construction. They all got to design a bridge and it had to hold books in top. They all made their bridges out of straws, there were varying degrees of success.

School Uniform - a Plea!

We have a selection of school hoodies and zip up jumpers in school which have been donated. We don’t have all sizes but please do ask before you buy new.

Pupils are expected to attend in school uniform every day – black trousers/leggings, school hoodie/jacket and black shoes with no logo on. Please can we also remind you to put your child’s name, not just initials, in all school uniform.

Community Police Visit

We continue to have a good relationship with our local community police team.

PC Fraser and PCSO Sarah visited us early in January, they talked to all the classes about internet safety. They stayed for lunch and let some pupils sit in the police car and see all the controls.

PGL Visit March 2026

PGL 2026 is looming and everyone is getting very excited about it.

Please do NOT send clothes and shoes which you do not want to end up wet and muddy. The kit list is here and below:
Pupils will need to bring (the full list from PGL is on the next page):

  • A sleeping bag or duvet (the school can provide a sleeping bag if needed, please let us know as soon as possible if you would like us to supply this).
  • Toiletries.
  • Clothes that you don’t mind getting wet/muddy/ruined – school uniform is NOT required.
  • Two pairs of shoes – which you don’t mind being ruined/wet/muddy.
  • Healthy snacks.
  • A water bottle.
  • Any medication taken at night – see further down for information.
  • Spending money – please send no more than £10. Staff will put the money in labelled envelopes and will hold onto it until there is time to go to the shop. All change will be handed back to staff and put into individual, named envelopes.
  • Mobile phones/tablets/electronic devices – the rule is the same at school, all phones will be put in a locked box and staff will look after them.

 

Please make sure EVERYTHING is clearly labelled. The school will not be responsible for any missing items.

There will be 45 mins at the end of day where students can use their phones.

Please do not bring a huge bag if possible, there will only be a `cubby` space in the bedrooms to store luggage.

Please send in a couple of bin bags to put dirty clothes and shoes in to go home.

School Christmas Disco

We held our now regular, school disco last week.

The pupils were very excited and made lots of requests for their favourite tunes! Staff and pupils enjoyed the experience of having down time together.

ITFC Match Visit

Ipswich Town FC Foundation are regular visitors to our school.

Sam teaches football skills and Sophie facilitates a “premiership inspires programme”, which is designed to engage young people in their learning, inspire them to have high aspirations and provide them with the key skills they need to achieve their goals.

We were lucky enough to be given some tickets to the ITFC V Stoke match this month. Pupils attended with their families, and some staff went along too.

Red Rose Chain Panto - Alice in Wonderland

Staff and pupils had a thoroughly enjoyable time watching the panto Alice in Wonderland at the Avenue Theatre in Ipswich. Some staff got themselves very involved!

We enjoyed it so much that we plan to go back again in 2026 for the third year running.

Visit from Jack Abbott MP

Jack Abbott, our local MP, visited our school this term. He had a walk around and visited the pupils in their classes. Our Pupil Council then had a meeting with him and were told they could ask him questions. Although reluctant at first, they proceed to ask many varied questions including questions about life in parliament and his car! 

Jack said he would like to visit again soon, we look forward to welcoming him back.

Managing Winter Illness

Now we are firmly in the cold and flu months and we know that it can be difficult to know whether to send a pupil in if they are feeling under the weather. The NHS has a useful website NHS guidance for parents, which is a useful resource to help parents decide when children should stay at home.

Is My Child Too Ill For School?

Family Meet Ups

From Wednesday 7th January 2026 we will be opening up our Visitors Room every Wednesday from 9.00-10.00.

This will be a chance for an informal chat with other parents/carers over a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit. We look forward to welcoming you.

Pupil Celebration Ceremony

We are excited to announce that there will be a ceremony on 3rd July to celebrate pupils across Paradigm Trust who have displayed all three of Paradigm’s values (integrity; community; excellence).

This event will take place at Ipswich Academy on Friday 3 July, starting from 2:15pm. Parents/carers of children receiving awards will be invited to attend. We will send invites nearer the time.
